Wimbledon kicked off this Monday but was severely compromised by rainy conditions that have forced numerous delays to games during its first two days, but action continues nonetheless. Although not at its usual speed, Novak Djokovic remains betting top male player while Iga Swiatek remains ahead in women’s team betting by an unexpectedly narrow margin. Unfortunately for those expecting predictable outcomes from this first round of Wimbledon – including Coco Gauff being knocked off by Sofia Kenin and Nick Kyrgios having to withdraw due to injuries – they have seen unexpected developments that they weren’t expecting: Coco Gauff’s elimination happened by Sofia Kenin; whilst Nick Kyrgios had to withdraw due to injuries on day three – unlike expected! Favorites to win the Wimbledon 2023 men’s championship
Nick Kyrgios entered with 40/1 odds to win and was scheduled to face David Goffin in their opening-round match before pulling out due to a torn ligament tearing his wrist. Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime, considered an odds-on favorite to make it into round two, was defeated four sets to one by Michael Mmoh despite being an odds-on favourite himself. Meanwhile on the men’s side it was almost all chalk with Novak Djokovic easily beating Pedro Cachin in straight sets while Carlos Alcaraz did the same with Jeremy Chardy before rain started falling on Tuesday afternoon before it set in.
Favorites to win the 2023 Wimbledon women’s championship
Sofia Kenin caused shockwaves in the women’s first games when she beat Coco Gauff, No. 7, with three sets on Monday morning – who started with 16/1 odds to win, just outside the outer circle of favorite players. Kenin suffered an unsatisfactory end after reaching the semi-finals at both Australian and French Opens this year, dropping into 25/1 odds for both tournaments. Other upsets were experienced on Saturday: Liudmila Samsonova (15th seed) fell victim to unranked Ana Bogdan in straight sets, and 24-seed Qinwen Zheng lost to Katerina Siniakova. Venus Williams won’t be looking for an unlikely comeback against Elina Svitolina; she was defeated in straight sets. On the second day, numerous matches were suspended due to heavy rainfall, meaning that much remains up for debate regarding who will progress to round 2. However, top players had their work cut out for them when the heavens opened up and all-out play ensued. Iga Swiatek had an impressive straight sets win against Zhu Lin on Monday while Aryna Sabalenka performed admirably against Panna Udvardy on Tuesday. Elena Rybakina dropped her initial match against Shelby Rogers 6-4 but recovered well to sweep all subsequent ones 6-2 and 6-1 to advance into the 2nd round.
